Spring turkey hunting season is upon us! Hunters across the country are either preparing to head out and take home turkeys, or have already made their way into the fields to chase gobblers.
While you may already know the differences between fall and spring turkey hunting, or how to perfect your turkey calls, there’s a lot you might now know about your prey. Check out these seven interesting facts about turkeys!
1. Size Matters
According to studies, the length of a male turkey’s snood – the fleshy mass over their beak – can be an indicator of that turkey’s health. A Journal of Avian Biology study from 1997 also found the female turkeys prefer male birds with longer snoods, as well as the fact that snood length is most often an accurate metric in predicting the winner in a competition between two male turkeys.
